The 9th Annual Summer

Sight-Singing & Vocal Technique Courses!

August 2010

This is a unique Sight-Singing & Vocal Technique course where students learn to improve their musical reading and vocal skills at the same time! Each class we do vocal exercises to develop good singing habits and use sight reading books with accompaniment CDs which include a wide range of musical styles, instrumentations and genres to challenge and entertain the class as they learn progressively more difficult skills. The singers move from unison to four-part mixed voicing and classes range in size from 10-20 singers.

The students will learn to develop their auditory skills and demonstrate the ability to distinguish and sing intervals, while improving vocal technique, presentation, and musical performance. They will increase their understanding, expressiveness and skill in singing and improve their vocal skills in performance as a group and as individuals through increased studies in fundamental and choral techniques.

The Sight-Singing lessons include a wonderful variety of accompaniments for every exercise. Voice parts are not duplicated, thereby ensuring reading independence. It's fun, exciting, logical and sequential. A great way to learn sight-singing. In addition to exercises, in each section there are short songs provided for reading practice.

Level 1 - Beginner/Intermediate is designed for singers who may have studied music and singing with some or no previous music reading experience. The exercises begin with simple rhythms and pitches and gradually increase in difficulty. Over 200 educational and entertaining exercises.

Level 2 - Intermediate/Advanced is for those who have some experience sight-reading and basic technique, and/or want to become better "readers and/or leaders". We review concepts introduced in Level 1 and introduces larger jumps, harmonic minor, chromatics, more difficult rhythms and asymmetric metres. More than 195 musically interesting exercises.

Many take the courses annually to keep their reading and singing in shape and become stronger performers.

There is a 15 minute review before each class (especially for those who have to miss a class).
